Leave the hustle and bustle behind and breathe in the fresh air of this scenic London borough which sits on the edge of the River Thames. Notable for its maritime history, it is one of the five boroughs of the London Docklands.

History of Greenwich

The Palace of Placentia, built in the 15th century, gave the town its royal reputation and was the birthplace of many Tudors including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. During the English Civil War, the palace was rebuilt as the Royal Naval College in 1873 and then became a military education organisation until 1998. It was then turned over to the Greenwich foundation and the building is now open to the public with parts of it being used by the University of Greenwich and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

The area represents an upper-class culture and exhibits grand architecture including Georgian period estates. It is also home to the National Maritime Museum due to its seafaring history.

Things to do in Greenwich

Many of our guests choose us as their accommodation choice due to our excellent location close to local attractions. As one of the best hotels near Greenwich, our guests often opt to visit this scenic area as a day out. There are lots to do and see in Greenwich including the Royal Observatory which houses the UK’s largest refracting telescope and London’s only planetarium. Climb aboard the Cutty Sark, the only remaining clipper from the golden age of sail which was used to transport tea from China to Britain. Explore this exceptional ship and get a feel for what life was like aboard this 19-century vessel.

Enjoy breath-taking royal architecture at Queen’s House; a stunning estate originally built for Anne of Denmark in 1616. One of Britain’s first classical buildings, you can enjoy the magnificent details of the décor and wander around the pristine gardens.

After spending your day walking and exploring, visit Greenwich Park for some relaxation time. London’s oldest Royal Park exhibits gorgeous views over the River Thames and the city. Spend time at one of the park’s cafés for a coffee or bring a picnic to enjoy in the open green space and you may even spot some deer roaming about.
